Remedial Massage works to heat muscles and tendons that are damaged, impaired or knotted. It holitically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort back to the original cause. It uses specialised techniques to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin usually with an oil lubricant. Passive stretching moves are also employed.
Relaxation massage (also known as Swedish Massage) is a system of long strokes, kneading, fiction, tapping, percussion and shaking motions that apply pressure between muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish Massage feels goods, is relaxing and invigorating.
Deep Tissue Massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres.
Myofascial dry needling is a therapy that has been adapted from acupuncture in that it uses fine needles applied to the musculoskeletal system in order to deactivate myofascial trigger points. A myofascial trigger point can be defined as a hyperirritable spot in a skeletal muscle that is painful when compressed and can cause referred pain or tenderness, motor dysfunction and autonomic phenomena. However, you should not confuse dry needling with acupuncture as they are actually two different things. Acupuncture uses points that lie along the body’s meridians or energy channels, while myofascial dry needling uses points that are defined by western based anatomy and physiology.
Cupping Therapy is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin; practitioners believe this mobilises blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devides (hand or electric pump). The suctions draws toxins to the body's surface, and increases blood flow between the fascia (the thin covering of the muscles) and the muscle body.
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called "moxa" are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. Moxa is usually made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris), but it can be made of other substances as well. The moxa material is compressed into a stick or pole, looking not unlike an oversized cigar that can be lit and allowed to smoulder, producing a unique form of very penetrating heat. The smouldering moxa stick is held over specific areas, often, though not always, corresponding to certain acupuncture points. The glowing end of the moxa stick is held about an inch or two above the surface of the skin until the area reddens and becomes suffused with warmth.
